22 Lives Lost on Roads Nationwide During Eid

Yesterday, on Eid day, five people died in a road accident in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. In total, at least 22 people have died in road accidents across various districts of the country during Eid. Among the victims, some were returning home to their loved ones to celebrate Eid, some were out with friends after prayers, and others were returning to Dhaka by bus.

Eleven of those who lost their lives in these accidents were motorcyclists.

Between Wednesday evening and Thursday night (9 PM), five people died in road accidents in Gopalganj, three in Faridpur, two each in Dinajpur, Narsingdi, Gaibandha, and Patuakhali, and one each in Kushtia, Madaripur, and Narail. Among the deceased were three children and two teenagers.

Five killed in Gopalganj: Five people were killed when a Dola Paribahan passenger bus overturned while trying to save a motorcycle in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila.

Among the deceased were one child, one woman, and three men. At least 25 others were injured in the incident.

The accident occurred around 11:45 AM on Thursday (May 28) in the Bedgram area of Sadar Upazila. Gopalganj Police Super Md. Habibullah confirmed the incident.

The identities of three of the deceased have been confirmed: Shoyon Dhali (20), son of Somesh Dhali from Borobaria village, Chitalmari Upazila, Bagerhat; Mosa. Khadija Khatun (35), daughter of Abdul Khalek from Kalardowania village, Nazirpur Upazila, Pirojpur; and Md. Sohag (37), son of Abu Hanif from the same area. The identities of the child and two other victims are yet to be ascertained.

Nayon Chandra Debnath, OC (Investigation) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, stated that two of the five deceased were motorcyclists, and the other three were bus passengers.

Nine more motorcyclists killed in five other districts: Nine people died in Faridpur, Narsingdi, Patuakhali, Narail, and Kushtia.

All of them were either motorcyclists or passengers. In Patuakhali, two teenagers died after going out for a ride on a motorcycle following Eid prayers. The accident occurred around 11 AM on Thursday in the Gramin Bank area of the Upazila town.

The two deceased were Md. Faisal Hawlader (16), son of fish trader Jabbar Hawlader from Shyamolibrag area, Ward No. 2, Galachipa Municipality, and Tamim Matubbar (16), son of businessman Abul Hossain Matubbar from the same area.

Galachipa Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Imtiaz Ahmed said that news of the death of two young men in a road accident has been received. However, no complaint has been lodged by the families so far.

In Shibpur, Narsingdi, two young men were killed in a head-on motorcycle collision. One person died at the scene yesterday, Wednesday evening. The other died today, Thursday morning, while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Another young man injured in the incident is currently receiving treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Pangu Hospital). The two deceased were Ruman Mia (26), son of Abdur Rob Mia from Protaponagar village, Jhenaigati Upazila, Sherpur; and Chan Mia (19), son of Shah Ahammad from Baghaata village, Shilmondi Union, Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. The injured Abdullah (19) is a resident of Palpara area of the same union.

Shibpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Ajay Bala said that since there was no complaint, Ruman Mia’s body was handed over to his relatives without an autopsy. Preparations are underway to take Chan Mia’s body, who died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, home.

In Bhanga, Faridpur, two motorcycle riders were killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles. Two passengers on the motorcycles were also injured. The accident occurred around 10:30 PM last Wednesday on the Dhaka-Barishal Highway, in the Purba Sadardi bus stand area of Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur.

The two deceased were Saiful Molla (25), son of Kanchan Molla from Gangadardi area, Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur, and Al Imran Sharif (28), son of Jahangir Sharif from Jianagar Mohalla, Rupatali Housing Area, Barishal Sadar Upazila.

Bhanga Highway Police OC Md. Helal Uddin said that the bodies of the two deceased were kept at the highway police station overnight. Following applications from their relatives, the bodies were handed over to their families on Thursday morning. The two motorcycles involved in the accident have been kept at the police station.

Additionally, around 7 PM yesterday, in front of the CCBL oil pump in Suwadi village, Algir Union, one person named Md. Alimuzzaman Matubbar (55) died in a head-on collision between two motorcycles. Three other passengers on the motorcycles were injured in the incident. The deceased Alimuzzaman was a resident of Uttarkandi village, Kaichail Union, Nagarkanda Upazila, Faridpur.

Meanwhile, in Lohagara, Narail, a young man died in an accident while out for a motorcycle ride. Another motorcyclist was seriously injured in the incident.

The accident occurred around 3 PM on Thursday in the Alamunshir Mor area due to a collision with a bus.

The deceased young man, Sabbir Gazi (18), was the son of Babul Gazi from Digholia village, Abhaynagar Upazila, Jashore district. The injured, Shaukat Hossain (19), is the son of Ripon Gazi from the same village.

Lohagara Thana Police Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy said that police have been sent to the accident site and the hospital. The deceased’s body has been taken into police custody from the hospital. After legal procedures, the body will be handed over to the relatives.

Furthermore, in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, three friends, all SSC candidates, were seriously injured when a speeding motorcycle lost control and hit a road divider (eyeliner). The motorcycle was severely damaged, and two road dividers were broken.

The accident occurred around 11 AM on Thursday (May 28) on the south side of Yaduboyra Bridge, built over the Gorai River in Kumarkhali.

The injured were Robin Sheikh (18), Forhad Hossain (18), and Tutul Hossain (20) from Lalonbazar area of Yaduboyra Union. They are all friends and had taken the SSC examination this year from Yaduboyra Secondary School.

According to locals, the three friends had gone out for a ride to celebrate Eid. They were traveling from Yaduboyra Bridge towards Joybangla Bazar on an Apache 4V motorcycle. On the way, due to excessive speed, the motorcycle lost control and forcefully hit the road divider. As a result, all three were thrown off and seriously injured.

Locals later rescued them and took them to Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex. After primary treatment, they were sent to Kushtia General Hospital for better treatment.

Eyewitness Md. Saidul stated that the motorcycle was traveling at about 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. The accident occurred when it lost control while taking a turn.

Injured Forhad Hossain said, “We went out for a bit of a ride on Eid. The vehicle was going too fast. We lost control while taking a turn and hit a pole.”

Kumarkhali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Amirul Islam said that the accident occurred when the motorcycle lost control and hit a divider. He urged people not to give motorcycles to minors and to drive carefully on the roads.

Three more killed in two districts: In Ghuraghat Upazila, Dinajpur, two children were killed when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw collided with the rear of a parked truck on the highway. The mothers of the two children were injured in the incident. The accident occurred around 5:30 AM on Thursday on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in the Kanagari Bazar area of the Upazila.

The deceased children were Md. Abdullah (4), son of Samsul Haque and Dulali Begum from Rashidpur village, Pachbibi Upazila, Joypurhat; and Arifa Khatun (4), daughter of Al Amin and Farida Begum from Baro Ariya village, Alihat Union, Hakimpur Upazila, Dinajpur. The injured Dulali Begum (25) and Farida Begum (20) are undergoing treatment at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Ghuraghat Police Station OC Shahidul Islam said that the truck driver fled after the accident. Following applications from the families, the bodies of the two children were handed over to their relatives without an autopsy. A general diary (GD) has been filed at the police station regarding the incident.

Additionally, in Shibchar, Madaripur, a person named Sattar Hawlader (55) died after falling from a bus. The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the area bordering Padma Bridge on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway. The deceased Sattar Hawlader was from Sadarpur, Faridpur.

Shibchar Highway Police reported that Sattar Hawlader was traveling to Dhaka on a Prochesta Paribahan bus, which had departed from Bhanga. He was seated in the front (engine cover) of the bus. When the bus passed Pachchar and reached a place called Shimana, the driver suddenly applied the brakes. At this moment, Sattar was thrown off and fell out of the bus door. He was then taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Shibchar Highway Police OC Md. Mizanur Rahman said that the person died after being thrown out through the open door when the bus suddenly braked hard and lost control. Police have inspected the scene. Legal action is underway regarding this matter.

Two killed in Gaibandha: In Palashbari Upazila, Gaibandha, two people, including a Chhatra League leader, who were passengers in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw, died after being run over by a passenger bus in the Raigram area of the municipal town. Another young man was seriously injured in the incident.

Gobindaganj Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Faruk confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier, the accident occurred around 1:45 AM on Wednesday night on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway.

The deceased were Hasan Ali Prodhan (26), convenor of Palashbari Government College Chhatra League and son of Serajul Islam from Paschim Goalpara village, and Siddique Ali (35), the auto-rickshaw driver and son of Kofil Uddin from the same village. The seriously injured young man is Maruf Prodhan (18), a resident of Palashbari municipal town.

Gobindaganj Highway Police SI Faruk said that autopsies of the two young men killed in the road accident were conducted at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. After legal procedures, their bodies were handed over to their relatives.

Three killed in bus-Mahindra collision in Chittagong: On Eid night, three people died in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a Mahindra (three-wheeler) in the Crossing Tower area, west of Vella Para Bridge, on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway. At least 30 others were injured. The accident occurred around 9 PM on Thursday (May 28).

Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. Traffic on the highway was temporarily halted after the accident. Highway police have seized the bus and the Mahindra. Legal action is being taken regarding the matter, said Md. Harunur Rashid, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patia Highway Police.
