66 mins: Sydney are up against it with the momentum – and crowd – all behind Auckland. The Black Knights are undefeated in their last eight games when going ahead and are looking to most likely to score again. Joe Lolley replaces Akol Akon and will be out to bounce back from an indifferent season.
64 mins: Kamijo fouls Cosgrove in the Sky Blues’ attacking half without any obvious danger. But the ball is suddenly in their own box where Louis Verstraete takes a hurried shot off his left boot that sails out for a goal kick.
62 mins: Sydney set out to chase the game and are immediately into their attacking third. Dan Hall lunges to clear a cross and every effort is now being cheered by home fans.
GOAL! Auckland 1-0 Sydney (Howieson ‘60)
Auckland have the lead and Go Media Stadium goes bananas as Cameron Howieson scores from long range rocket into the back of the net. Devenish-Meares is wrong-footed by a deflection and Howieson has saved his first goal of the season for the best possible time.
60 mins: This has been Sydney’s best period of the game but Stamatelopoulos releases the pressure with a foul on Verstraete.
58 mins: Garuccio takes the free kick and clears the wall but is unable to get the dip needed from close range. Callan Elliot is the next to go in the referee’s notebook with a needless challenge on Grant in the midfield. Sam Cosgrove also has a card to his name after disputing the free kick that Garuccio went on to waste.
56 mins: Akon charges at the Black Knights defensive line and Hall throws out a boot in panic. A stamp on the teenager’s right foot earns a yellow card and gifts the Sky Blues a free kick in a tasty area.
53 mins: Grant gets into a more dangerous area outside the top of the attacking box. The Sky Blues captain picks out Akon to deliver a delicious cross into the six-yard box. But his teammates are yet to arrive and Woud claims the ball in the air while almost tripping over himself. A little pressure might have been enough to worry the Black Knight keeper.
53 mins: Cosgrove picks up the ball at the top of the box and goes searching for space down the left. Grant tracks his run and a gentle nudge sends the Black Knights forward spilling to ground. The parochial crowd are convinced it’s a penalty, as is Auckland coach Steve Corica. But Grant barely touched Cosgrove and even managed to get a toe to the ball.
51 mins: Sydney open up the Auckland defence against the run of play. Quispe picks out Quintal charging into the box but Hall times his run to perfection and gets a boot in just in time. Quintal’s boot was a touch high as they came together but the referee waves the claims away.
49 mins: Sydney each a cheap free kick for a handball and send a cross into the box. Dan Hall clears for Auckland and Brook quickly unleashes Randall down the left. The Sky Blues scramble back to close down the danger while giving away a corner. Randall slips on his delivery but it only creates confusion in the box before the ball trickles out for a goal kick.
46 mins: Sam Cosgrove kicks off for Auckland to get the second half of the A-League Men grand final under way. It was a physical opening half that likely would have left Sydney coach Patrick Kisnorbo the happier as his side remained in the game without spending much time in their attacking half.
Half-time: Auckland 0-0 Sydney
All square at the break after a cagey opening with neither side creating much of note. Sydney FC have had the more of the ball with 62% possession but that has mostly been through knocking it around at the back or frantically trying to play out from defence and into the midfield.
Auckland have had more shots with four to one, though both sides have had a single shot on target and neither of those truly tested the keeper.
47 mins: Wataru Kamijo and Cameron Howieson come together heavily as both slide into a challenge. The Sky Blues midfielder is slower to get to his feet but should hold out until the break.
45 mins: Randall gets a shot away from the top corner of the box and forces a save from Devenish-Meares. That was one of few shots on target in the first half. There will be two added minutes.
43 mins: Randall picks up the ball at the top of the box and goes searching for a way through. The Sky Blues defence stands firm but the young New Zealander is proving to be a real handful.
41 mins: Piero Quispe bursts through the midfield as the Sky Blues look for the teenager to add pace to their game. A timely leap from Louis Verstraete gets a foot on the ball and brings Quispe to ground heavily and he is forced to leave the field for attention.
39 mins: The Black Knights are back on the front foot with Randall exploding down the left and again testing the Sky Blues defensive line. The speedster earns a corner and sends in the cross himself only for Devenish-Meares to take command in his six-yard box.
37 mins: The Sky Blues keep living on the edge on their way out of defence as they invite the Black Knights to press. There are a few nervy moments, especially with the ball is at Devenish-Meares’ feet, but the main concern remains the breakdown in midfield.
34 mins: After a more positive period for the Sky Blues in their attacking third, the Black Knights take control again. The long crosses into the box cause some confusion but the defence is able to clear without too much concern.
31 mins: Nando Pijnaker earns the first yellow card of the final as Akol Akon passes off the ball in a tight area and threatens to burst forward without a Black Knights defender in front of him. Pijnaker tugs the 17-year-old’s shirt and is content to cop a timely caution.
29 mins: Sydney finally break out of their defence and unleash Tiago Quintal into space down the left. The 19-year-old gets a toe in to nudge the ball forward before having his own path blocked. Quintal goes to ground calling for a foul that, I’m not entirely sure why, never arrives.
27 mins: Devenish-Meares puts his teammate under intense pressure in the most dangerous area with a sloppy pass into the midfield. Wataru Kamijo comes charging toward his keeper but has to get a foot in just to block the pass ending up at Black Knights feet, then desperately scrambles to clear way and spare Devenish-Meares’ blushes.
25 mins: Sky Blues keeper Devenish-Meares leaps high to pull down a tricky cross from Randall on the left. The Black Knights are building the pressure.
23 mins: Randall is enjoying a purple patch as he puts Grant in particular under pressure. The Black Knights appear to have found their target as they continue to search for space on the left.
20 mins: Randall opens up another sprint this time down the left flank to outpace Sky Blues veteran Grant. A heavy touch takes the ball too deep but a sliding Grant has little choice but to get a foot in and give away a corner.
18 mins: Jesse Randall races behind the Sky Blues’ defence to chase down a long ball into the right attacking pocket. A clearance ends up with Lachie Brook to take a shot from long range that flies across the face of goal and diving keeper Devenish-Meares.
16 mins: Sam Cosgrove goes to ground in the penalty box and the cries go up calling for a penalty. There appeared to be contact but Cosgrove was quick to exaggerate it, and the appeals are rightly waved away.
14 mins: We expected a spicy encounter, and would hope for nothing less in a grand final, and there are signs of this heating up. Plenty of physicality and jostling for position in the Black Knights box before Apostolos Stamatelospoulous gets a shot away without connecting to test Auckland keeper Michael Woud.
12 mins: The Sky Blues are allowed time to hold on to the ball at the back and pass it across the defensive line with the Black Knights flooding into the midfield.
10 mins: Auckland take control of the midfield as Garuccio and Quintal turn the ball over cheaply for Sydney. But the Black Knights can only poke and prod without setting up anything resembling a chance.
7 mins: Auckland bypass the midfield to get the ball back in their attacking third. The Sydney defence have to clear their lines with another timely header as a pattern begins to form around Auckland’s likely approach.
5 mins: Auckland have the ball in the back of the net but the whistle has long blown. Sam Cosgrove is penalised for dragging Ben Garuccio to ground. Sydney open up a quick transition and Tiago Quintal picks out Akol Akon breaking the line. But the 17-year-old is a step ahead of the defence and, after Garuccio has a shot blocked, is belatedly called offside. Hopefully the frenetic opening is a sign of what’s to come.
3 mins: Auckland win an free kick for a handball not too far away from the top of the penalty box. The cross is a bit too deep and beyond the six-yard before it is cleared away by a defensive header for a throw.
1 min: Sydney knock the ball around as they edge into the attacking half. But Auckland are quick to win it back and claim some early control.
Kick-off
Peeeeeeep! Sydney begin the A-League Men grand final at Go Media Stadium.
We aren’t too far away from kick-off with the players making their way out on to Go Media Stadium. Sydney FC are yet to defeat Auckland FC in the New Zealand side’s two seasons as part of the A-League Men. But there has been little to separate the two sides in most of their meetings with the Black Knights taking out two matches by the narrowest of margins, and the four other clashes finishing in draws. The clubs played out a 2-2 draw in their last A-League match in April at Allianz Stadium. Ben Garuccio and Alexandar Popovic scored for the Sky Blues, while Guillermo May hit two for Auckland including a second in the 90th minute.
Auckland have a rather unconvincing record on home soil this season with five wins, six draws, and four losses in the league. There is a sold out crowd at Go Media Stadium tonight, and after a frankly spine-tingling buildup it’s now over to Sydney FC to spoil the party.

The best-laid plans of the A-League Men often go awry. A grand final filled with the romance of one, perhaps even two, perennial underachievers capping their resurgence by reaching the decider was all but written in the stars this year. But Sydney FC and Auckland FC flipped the script against the premiers Newcastle Jets and regular season runners-up Adelaide United. Rather than a finale between two sides packed with bright young things who have helped give an embattled league a lift, Saturday’s grand final will instead be a meeting between the most successful club in the history of the competition and upstarts from across the ditch.

Auckland FC also named an unchanged starting XI with it hard to omit anyone from their hugely impressive win over Adelaide United in the second leg of their semi-final. The Black Knights will likely set up in a 5-4-1 formation with their wing-backs Sakai and Elliot especially important on home soil.

Sydney FC back in the starting XI that got the job done in the second leg of the semi-final against Newcastle Jets last week. A 4-2-3-1 looks likely with Akol Akon, who turned 17 only two days ago, to become the youngest starter in a grand final in Australian National League history.
Sky Blues captain Grant is out to equal the record for five championship to his name.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the A-League Men grand final between Auckland FC and Sydney FC at Go Media Stadium. History is being made, for better and worse, with this the first A-Leagues decider to be staged in New Zealand. On the other hand, it is also the first men’s final to be held without either of the top two teams from the premiership campaign earning a spot in the last game of the season.
The finalists are both well worth their place in the championship decider though, after Auckland steamrolled Adelaide United away from home in the second leg of their semi-final and then Sydney broke Newcastle hearts in a penalty shootout the following night.
